McKinney Oktoberfest returns to Historic Downtown McKinney September 25–27, 2026.
Admission to the festival grounds is free, and this year's three-day event includes German music and dancing, food and drinks, children's activities, stein-holding competitions, the annual Beard & Mustache Competition and one of the weekend's perennial crowd favorites—the 17th Annual Weenie Dog Races. Visit McKinney
The basic schedule:
Day | Festival Hours |
|---|---|
Friday, Sept. 25 | 5–11 PM |
Saturday, Sept. 26 | 11 AM–11 PM |
Sunday, Sept. 27 | Noon–5 PM |
Friday also includes an early Happy Hour from 2–4:30 PM before the festival officially opens. McKinney Main Street
But after living in McKinney for more than 28 years, here's the advice I'd give someone who has never been:
Don't treat Oktoberfest like an event you're driving to. Treat it like a day in Downtown McKinney.
First: What's New for Parking in 2026?
McKinney Main Street says there are two free trolleys running approximately every 15 minutes, and there's a new option this year:
Park at McKinney City Hall and ride the Downtown Trolley to Oktoberfest.
The previous church parking/trolley option is also available. McKinney Main Street
If you're coming during peak Saturday hours, I'd strongly consider using the trolley instead of circling the square hoping a parking spot magically appears.

Is McKinney Oktoberfest Free?
Yes.
General admission to the festival is free, and you can come and go throughout the day.
Certain activities, food, drinks and premium experiences cost extra. Visit McKinney
One small planning detail: McKinney Main Street says festival payments are by card and there are no ATMs, so that's worth knowing before you arrive. McKinney Main Street
What Should Families See?
Oktoberfest isn't simply a beer festival.
There's a Kinder Korner for children along with music, dancing and activities throughout the downtown area. McKinney Main Street
And then there are the dogs.
The 17th Annual Weenie Dog Races
More than 70 dachshunds—and "Wannabes," meaning other breeds—are expected to race during this year's event. Registration is free through Eventbrite. Visit McKinney
If you're bringing children, this is one of the events I'd actually plan around rather than simply hoping you happen upon it.
Want Something Very McKinney?
Try the stein-holding competition.
The traditional Masskrugstemmen contest requires competitors to hold a one-liter glass stein straight out at shoulder height for as long as possible.
It sounds easy until you imagine holding it there for several minutes.
There is also a Beard & Mustache Competition, Brewmaster Sessions and the TUPPS Brat Eating Competition. Visit McKinney
It's just serious enough to become competitive and just ridiculous enough to be Oktoberfest.
My Saturday Strategy
If I were taking someone who had never experienced McKinney before, I wouldn't arrive Saturday evening, fight the biggest crowds, see two blocks and leave.
I'd make a day of it.
Late morning: arrive around 11
Use one of the trolley options and get downtown near opening.
Walk the festival before it becomes busiest.
Lunch: eat at the festival
This is not the day I'd make a lunch reservation somewhere else.
Try the German food and enjoy the actual event.
Afternoon: wander off the festival route
Walk some of the streets surrounding the square.
Go into the locally owned shops.
Look at the buildings.
Notice the older homes as you move away from downtown.
The festival is fun.
McKinney itself is the interesting part.
Evening: stay downtown
As the lights come on, the square feels completely different than it does at 11 AM.
Stay for music, dinner or drinks rather than treating downtown like an event venue you're trying to escape from.
Need an Air-Conditioned Break?
There are also businesses surrounding the festival creating their own Oktoberfest experiences.
For example, The Chestnut Hall is offering a ticketed Saturday Oktoberfest experience upstairs overlooking the square, with air conditioning, a full bar, food, balcony access and live entertainment. The Chestnut Hall
Gather On The Square is also holding an Oktoberfest celebration Saturday with live music, cocktails, light bites and football. Visit McKinney
Those aren't necessary to enjoy the festival—the main festival remains free—but they're useful if you want somewhere to cool down and regroup.
Why Oktoberfest Is Actually a Pretty Good Introduction to McKinney
This is where my Realtor brain takes over.
When someone is relocating to North Texas, they'll usually start with measurable things:
* Home Price * Square Footage * Schools * Commute * Taxes
All important.
But none of those tells you whether you'll actually enjoy living somewhere.
Historic Downtown McKinney is one of the things that distinguishes McKinney from many of its neighbors.
The square isn't something created last year as an amenity for a master-planned development.
It's part of the city's history.
And then McKinney layers modern restaurants, boutiques, festivals and events onto it.
That's why I've said before that neighboring McKinney and Frisco can both be highly desirable while offering very different experiences.
My earlier article goes deeper into that distinction:
Frisco Is #1 and McKinney Is #2 — But They're Winning for Very Different Reasons
Oktoberfest is almost a live demonstration of that difference.
If You're Considering Moving to McKinney, Do This While You're Here
Once you've had your pretzel and watched a dachshund sprint down the track, get back in the car.
Drive through some of the neighborhoods surrounding downtown.
Then drive west, Explore Stonebridge Ranch, Drive through Adriatica, Continue toward the newer development near 121.
You're still in McKinney—but the experience changes dramatically.
That's the piece buyers sometimes miss when they search by city name alone.
I've also built an entire itinerary around exploring McKinney rather than simply touring houses:
A Full Saturday in McKinney: Farmers Market, Summer ArtFest & Dinner Downtown
Those are the kinds of days I recommend to relocation buyers.
Because before you decide where to buy a house, I want you to understand where you're buying a life.

McKinney Main Street — Official Oktoberfest Guide
Hi! I'm Michelle Gifford
I've lived in McKinney for more than 28 years, and events like Oktoberfest are part of why I tell buyers to experience a community before deciding where to live.
A house can check every box on paper.
The better question is whether the life outside that house feels like yours.
