What Is Plano Flags of Honor?

At first glance, the display is a remarkable sight: rows of American flags extending across the event field at Oak Point Park. The part that stays with you, though, is what hangs beneath the flags.

Every flag carries a dedication card. These cards recognize the service of individual people—neighbors, relatives, friends and members of the wider community. The tribute includes both those living today and those who have died. The organizers describe the event as a way to honor service, preserve personal stories and support causes connected to veterans and first responders.

This is not simply a decoration installed for Veterans Day. It is a public remembrance project that gives names and stories to the people being honored.

The 2026 display also marks 10 years of Plano Flags of Honor. The anniversary gives residents who have attended in previous years a reason to return and introduces the event to newcomers who may never have seen it.

When Can You Visit the Flags?

The public display runs November 7–14, and the organizers say the field is accessible 24 hours a day throughout the event.

The experience changes throughout the day. Morning light falls across the rows of flags; during the afternoon, the movement of the flags and their hanging tags adds sound to the field. The organizers also schedule Taps at dusk, including 5:15 PM on November 7 and November 11 according to the current daily calendar.

Because the event is outdoors, the schedule can change with weather. Organizers may temporarily remove flags if high winds are forecast, then reinstall them when conditions allow. The official visiting page is the best place to check for updates.

Participating organizations include Plano Fire-Rescue, Plano Police, Plano Public Works, Plano Parks & Recreation and Plano Public Library. A PHI Air Medical helicopter landing is also listed, subject to emergency calls.

The Fire Truck Pull is scheduled for 1:30–3:30 PM, with teams competing to pull a fire truck. The city lists the fair as free. The tethered balloon rides are a separate $25 per person, weather permitting. The Patriots Run has its own registration fees. Visit Plano's Safety Fair details provide additional information.

Can You Dedicate a Flag to Someone?

Yes. One of the most meaningful parts of the program is the opportunity to recognize someone personally.

The organizers invite people to submit an honor-card dedication for a veteran, active-duty service member or first responder. Their current homepage specifically says no donation is required to share a hero's story. Dedication and donation are separate choices.

If you're looking for a particular honoree at the field, organizers provide an online honor-card lookup and field docents can help visitors locate cards.

The organizer's Honor a Hero information explains how to participate.

What's Scheduled on Veterans Day, November 11?

Veterans Day falls on Wednesday, November 11, 2026. Plano Flags of Honor will be open that day as part of the weeklong display.

The currently published November 11 schedule includes the main U.S. flag raising at 8:00 AM and a Taps performance at 5:15 PM. More activities may be listed as the date approaches, so check the official November 11 schedule before visiting for a particular program.

Where Is Oak Point Park, and What About Parking?

The flag field is at Red Tail Pavilion at Oak Point Park, with the entrance near the pavilion sign at 2801 E. Spring Creek Parkway, Plano.

The organizers provide day-specific parking maps, which matter because opening-day events and other scheduled programs may use different parking areas. Accessible parking is available, and a golf cart may be available during peak periods to help transport visitors from parking spaces to the field. Portable toilets and a handwashing station are listed near the event tent.

The visitor page has the current parking and accessibility details.

What Does This Tell Us About Life in Plano?

When people think of Plano, they often picture established neighborhoods, major employers, shopping and restaurants. Those are real parts of the city, but they don't tell the whole story.

Plano Flags of Honor is a different example of community life: local service organizations, volunteers, first responders, veterans and families gathering in one of the city's best-known parks around a shared tradition.

I've lived and worked in North Texas my entire life and have called McKinney home since 1998. As a Realtor, I spend a lot of time helping buyers understand how communities differ—not only the homes available, but also the spaces and traditions that bring residents together.

Oak Point Park itself is an interesting example. It hosts everything from the Plano Balloon Festival to this more reflective Veterans Day tribute. If you've read my Plano Balloon Festival guide, you already know the park as a major gathering place. Flags of Honor shows a completely different use for the same space.

For another side of Plano, my guide to Historic Downtown Plano explores the city's older buildings, local businesses and arts district.
