If you’ve been meaning to spend a day exploring McKinney rather than simply driving through it, Saturday, August 29 gives you a particularly good excuse.
Start your morning at the McKinney Farmers Market at Chestnut Square, head a few minutes east to the historic Cotton Mill for the free, indoor MillHouse Summer ArtFest, and finish the day shopping, eating and lingering around Historic Downtown McKinney.
Summer ArtFest runs August 29–30 from 11 a.m.–5 p.m. inside the Cotton Mill and features approximately 60 juried artists working in fine art, jewelry, pottery, woodworking, photography, fiber art and mixed media. Admission and parking are free.
And because the Farmers Market runs Saturday morning from 8 a.m.–noon, the timing lines up almost perfectly.

8:30 AM: Start at the McKinney Farmers Market
Begin at Chestnut Square Heritage Village, just south of the downtown square.
The McKinney Farmers Market operates every Saturday during the main season from 8 a.m.–noon, with local produce, artisanal foods and goods from area vendors.
Chestnut Square itself is part of the experience. The 2.5-acre historic village includes six historic homes, a chapel, general store, replica one-room schoolhouse, blacksmith shop and other structures that tell the story of Collin County life from the mid-1800s into the early 20th century.

My suggestion: don't arrive at 11:45 expecting the full market experience. Go early, grab something for breakfast or coffee, shop the vendors and then head toward the Cotton Mill shortly before ArtFest opens.
11 AM: Head to the Cotton Mill for Summer ArtFest
This is the centerpiece of the day.
MillHouse Summer ArtFest takes place Saturday and Sunday, August 29–30, from 11 a.m.–5 p.m. inside the McKinney Cotton Mill.
And yes — inside is worth emphasizing in late August.
The juried festival brings together approximately 60 artists displaying original work throughout the Grand Hallway, Event Venue and Atrium Hallway. You'll find fine art, jewelry, pottery, woodworking, photography, fiber art, mixed media and handcrafted gifts.
There is no admission charge, and parking is free in Cotton Mill Lots A and B and across the street.

The Setting Is Part of the Reason to Go
The Cotton Mill isn't simply a convenient event venue.
The building dates to 1910 and is one of East McKinney's most recognizable pieces of industrial history. Today it houses artists, businesses and event spaces while retaining much of its original industrial character.
That combination — historic industrial architecture filled with contemporary art — is what makes this festival more interesting than an ordinary convention-center art show.
You can also stop at White Box Roastery for coffee, tea, pastries and sandwiches, and the festival plans to offer beer and wine for purchase along with food from Sophia's Authentic Homemade Haitian Cuisine.
1:30 PM: Move the Day Back Downtown
Once you've finished at the Cotton Mill, head back toward Historic Downtown McKinney.
Downtown has more than 120 independently owned businesses and over two dozen restaurants, plus boutiques, galleries, antique stores, wine rooms and specialty shops.
This is where I wouldn't over-plan.
Pick a few stores that catch your eye and walk.
That is one of the things Downtown McKinney does particularly well: it rewards wandering.
If you're visiting McKinney rather than living here, the Visit McKinney Experience Center at 200 W. Virginia Street also has maps, visitor information and free guides.
Where Should You Eat?
You have plenty of choices depending on what you want the day to feel like.
For an elevated dinner, Harvest at the Masonic is a Michelin Guide–recommended farm-to-table restaurant with a strong focus on locally sourced ingredients.
For a traditional McKinney special-occasion dinner, Rick's Chophouse has long been one of the square's upscale steak-and-seafood options.
Or, for something more relaxed, El Mejor gives you Tex-Mex right in the middle of downtown.
3 PM: Shop the Square Instead of Heading Home
This is the part visitors sometimes skip.
Don't.
Downtown McKinney has more than 100 locally owned boutiques, galleries, vintage stores and antique shops, so there is enough to fill another hour or two without feeling like you're walking through a conventional shopping center.
And on Saturdays, the downtown trolley operates 11 a.m.–7 p.m., which can make getting around the district easier.
Why This Is One of My Favorite Ways to Show Someone McKinney
If someone is thinking about moving to McKinney, I can show them neighborhoods all afternoon.
But that still doesn't tell them what living here feels like.
A day like this does.
You see Chestnut Square's history in the morning.
Then you see the Cotton Mill — another historic property — functioning as an arts and creative space.
Then you finish in a downtown district where locally owned businesses are still a major part of the identity.
That's a very different experience from some of North Texas's newer suburbs.
And it's why I think understanding a community goes beyond comparing houses, schools and commute times.
